Episode: 609
Airdate: February 14, 2016
Directed by: Greg Nicotero
Showrunner: Scott M. Gimple
Written by: Seth Hoffman (episode); Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore (graphic novels); Frank Darabont (creator)

After a serious downturn in episode quality over the latter half of Part A of this season, I was beginning to lose faith in Messrs. Gimple, Nicotero, and co. And then they give me tonight’s episode. From an opening that absolutely blew me away, through a second act that just ramped things up, and ending with a third act that put nearly everyone we know and love to watch in grave peril, this episode had it all. Having just finished watching the episode twice, I can’t say for certain whether this is due primarily to what I just saw, or if the poor showing of the last several episodes is having an undue effect on my opinion, but this felt like one of the best episodes I’ve seen of TWD ever. Time and further viewings may adjust this initial impression, but I suspect it won’t fall far short of that assessment. Click through for my full review.

Heavy. I can’t really say anything about this episode at all without giving away major spoilers. Yes, the title of my review is a spoiler – there is a strong possibility that someone big dies tonight – I’m just not saying who until after the break. So, if you’ve watched the episode, click on through to the other side. If not, watch it, then click through.

The title of tonight’s season premiere episode refers to the renewal of the relationship between Rick and Morgan, something fans of the show (and the comic book) have been anticipating for a couple of years now. The actual focus of the episode, however, was on the fallout of the series of events from last season’s finale, not the least of which was the clear shift in power from Deanna to Rick, and the group’s discovery of an enormous horde of walkers disquietingly close to the town walls – a horde that Rick is determined to deal with. Click through after the break to get my breakdown of the main events, and suggestions about where we might be headed this season.

Comic Con is up to its usual tricks, giving us all kinds of cool news and trailers for upcoming geekery. This morning’s panel on The Walking Dead saw the release of a heavy-weight trailer for Season 6, weighing in at a massive four-plus minutes – which makes sense, when you realize that the season premiere will be 90-minutes long, just like last season’s finale. Click through for the trailer and some commentary on what it reveals heading into October 11th’s release date.

Tonight marks the end of another season of The Walking Dead, a date that always seems to come just a little too soon for fans. And that goes even more so for this season, a season which, heading into the finale, is the best since Season 1 – perhaps even just a little bit better. But in order for Season 5 to be the triumph it’s been setting up to be, it’s final act needs to deliver; after all, there won’t be any more TWD until October, so the events tonight will, by their nature, set the tone for the kind of anticipation fans will feel in the long interim months. And tonight, they did just that – they delivered. Click through for my full review and episode synopsis – it’s a big one, almost 6000 words; the tl/dr is at the bottom, along with a poll regarding who you’re most likely to see as a role-model in the zombie apocalypse. Enjoy!

Last week saw the group at their absolute nadir, with the deaths of two mainstays happening in short order, and both water and food running out as they head north. Just as it looked like tension and desperation would break the group apart, we got a wonderful moment of bonding as they worked together to hold the barn doors against both nature and a horde of walkers. But the real stunner was the in the close – who is this Mr. All-American hiker dude? Is Aaron good, bad, or indifferent? And what – or who – has he been eating to look so healthy? Click through for my review of tonight’s episode, where we may get answers to all or none of these questions.

With events from the last two episodes fresh in their minds, the members of Rick’s group find themselves in more and more desperate times as they move north into new territory. To make things worse, a nasty dry spell has set in, making it hard to find water, and impossible to find food. As bad as things have been, they haven’t reached their nadir yet – how much lower can things go?

After last week’s departure from the main group, this week we’re going to get a second episode that deals with things away from Rick and the gang. Unfortunately for pretty much all of us, it won’t give us any of the burning questions left from the last two weeks; fortunately, we get to spend time with a couple of fan-favorite characters before rejoining the main story. Click through for my full preview of Episode 505.
