Six months have passed since the final episode of Season 6, an episode that left a bad taste in the mouths of many as they were forced to wait to see who Negan would choose. The episode ended on a first person perspective of the victim, Lucille coming down on his or her head, watching as the world faded to black. It felt, in many ways, to be an unfair ending to a season that was – to be honest – rather uneven at times. And while cliffhangers have a long and storied tradition in Hollywood, it still felt a little cheap. So with tonight’s big reveal, is all forgiven in Walking Dead Land?

Directed by: Kari Skogland

The bad news: tonight’s episode does not maintain the high standard put up by last week’s episode. The good news: that bar was pretty damned high, so even falling short this was a very enjoyable episode, with some nice twists and more than a few surprises. Click through for my complete review.

Episode: 514
Airdate: March 15, 2015
Directed by: Jennifer Chambers Lynch

As the group attempts to settle into their new “normal,” we just know that things can’t possibly be as smooth as they seem. There have been a few hints of underlying issues with the Alexandria community since the very beginning; in fact, Aaron and his presentation seem just about the smoothest part of the whole place (then again, that’s what you usually get from brochures advertising retirement communities). So, with the inevitable entropy that is the hallmark of The Walking Dead, tonight, three shows to the end of the season, seems like just about the right time to throw the monkey wrench (spanner for my British readers) into the works. And while we do, indeed, get some of this, it all happens in what is, for my money, the best paced and edited episode of the season so far.

Steve and Dan TWD 2

In a more-potty-mouthed-than-usual episode, Steve and Dan complain about rough-around-the-edges Rick and homosexual stereotypes. Contains mild comic-book spoilers and juvenile tittering. Does becoming the voice of reason mean a death sentence for Michonne? Why is Glenn channeling Dirty Harry-era Clint Eastwood? Will the group pass Aaron’s audition? And can you trust a man who doesn’t like apple sauce?

Episode: 511
Airdate: February 22, 2015
Directed by: Larysa Kondracki
Showrunner: Scott M. Gimple
Written by: Seth Hoffman (episode); Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore (graphic novels); Frank Darabont (creator)

Last week saw the group at their absolute nadir, with the deaths of two mainstays happening in short order, and both water and food running out as they head north. Just as it looked like tension and desperation would break the group apart, we got a wonderful moment of bonding as they worked together to hold the barn doors against both nature and a horde of walkers. But the real stunner was the in the close – who is this Mr. All-American hiker dude? Is Aaron good, bad, or indifferent? And what – or who – has he been eating to look so healthy? Click through for my review of tonight’s episode, where we may get answers to all or none of these questions.

Episode: 510
Airdate: February 15, 2015
Directed by: Julius Ramsay
Showrunner: Scott M. Gimple
Written by: Heather Bellson (episode); Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore (graphic novels); Frank Darabont (creator)

With events from the last two episodes fresh in their minds, the members of Rick’s group find themselves in more and more desperate times as they move north into new territory. To make things worse, a nasty dry spell has set in, making it hard to find water, and impossible to find food. As bad as things have been, they haven’t reached their nadir yet – how much lower can things go?

With the shocking (if not terribly surprising) and heartbreaking end to the first half of Season 5 already over two months in the rear-view mirror, it’s just about time to pull out the zombie survival kit and get ready for the latter half of the season. Starting this coming Sunday, we’ll get to see what the group decides to do, following the climactic events at Grady Memorial Hospital. I suppose it’s only appropriate that the episode is, in fact, named “What Happened and What’s Going On.” While I’m not going to go too far with prognostications here (and frankly, a knowledge of the comics would seem to be largely irrelevant for the most part, what with all the changes already made by Gimple and co.), I will have a look at the preview videos already released, and analyze the first two minutes of Episode 509, released two days ago (February 3) by AMC. Click through for the videos, and my commentary.
