With the events of the mid-season finale still fresh in our minds, I think that a lot of fans of The Walking Dead were expecting tonight’s episode to be a bit slower paced, a bit more reflective. And to be honest, what we did end up getting was supremely reflective, although the pace was not what I’d call slow – nor were the stakes lowered at all from the last episode. Greg Nicotero, special effects master on the show and the director of tonight’s episode, conjured up director Terrance Malick (naming him as an inspiration in the follow-up Talking Dead episode), and in so doing put together what may very well be one of the best – and certainly the most artistic – episodes of The Walking Dead so far. Steve and Dan TWD 2

Steve and Dan discuss events from the seventh episode of Season 5 of The Walking Dead, “Crossed”. This week, Steve and Dan are late, drunk, and simmering with rage. We talk yo-yos, plot-holes, and telepathic Bob.

<<Spoiler Warning: This podcast discusses events in The Walking Dead Season 5, Episode 7 “Crossed” at length, as well as referring to events in previous episodes.>>

This week’s episode, titled “Four Walls and a Roof,” may at first seem to hint at a new attempt at domesticity coming up for Rick and the gang; but I seem to remember hearing an old saying that goes something like: “Four walls and a roof do not a home make.” For the survivors, home is wherever they are, so long as they’re together. And with the events of last week, with three of them no longer in the fold, home is not feeling particularly safe at the moment. Click through for a look at this week’s preview trailer, as well as some of my observations on where we’re heading.

While last season opened with something of a whimper, full of foreshadowing and suggestion, tonight’s Season 5 premiere was all about the bang. From beginning to end, it was a non-stop adrenaline rush, as the action never seemed to let up. And the episode ended with a very big reveal, and one that gives a hint as to where things will be heading. Season 4 was perhaps the most consistently solid season of The Walking Dead so far, so Season 5 has some big shoes to fill; if tonight was any indication, they’re starting off on the right foot – it should be a fun ride.
