Episode: 602
Airdate: October 18, 2015
Directed by: Jennifer Chambers Lynch
Showrunner: Scott M. Gimple
Written by: Seth Hoffman (episode); Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Tony Moore (graphic novels); Frank Darabont (creator)

Best episode ever? If not, I’d have to firmly place this in my top two or three, right up there with last season’s premiere and follow-up. After last week’s relatively slow start (albeit with the sudden tension of the mysterious air horn at the very end), I was wondering how long it would take Gimple and co. to ramp things up in this sixth season. Wonder no more: things just got a lot hotter in Alexandria. Click through for my full review.

Comic Con is up to its usual tricks, giving us all kinds of cool news and trailers for upcoming geekery. This morning’s panel on The Walking Dead saw the release of a heavy-weight trailer for Season 6, weighing in at a massive four-plus minutes – which makes sense, when you realize that the season premiere will be 90-minutes long, just like last season’s finale. Click through for the trailer and some commentary on what it reveals heading into October 11th’s release date.

Tonight marks the end of another season of The Walking Dead, a date that always seems to come just a little too soon for fans. And that goes even more so for this season, a season which, heading into the finale, is the best since Season 1 – perhaps even just a little bit better. But in order for Season 5 to be the triumph it’s been setting up to be, it’s final act needs to deliver; after all, there won’t be any more TWD until October, so the events tonight will, by their nature, set the tone for the kind of anticipation fans will feel in the long interim months. And tonight, they did just that – they delivered. Click through for my full review and episode synopsis – it’s a big one, almost 6000 words; the tl/dr is at the bottom, along with a poll regarding who you’re most likely to see as a role-model in the zombie apocalypse. Enjoy!

With events from the last two episodes fresh in their minds, the members of Rick’s group find themselves in more and more desperate times as they move north into new territory. To make things worse, a nasty dry spell has set in, making it hard to find water, and impossible to find food. As bad as things have been, they haven’t reached their nadir yet – how much lower can things go?

After last week’s departure from the main group, this week we’re going to get a second episode that deals with things away from Rick and the gang. Unfortunately for pretty much all of us, it won’t give us any of the burning questions left from the last two weeks; fortunately, we get to spend time with a couple of fan-favorite characters before rejoining the main story. Click through for my full preview of Episode 505.

With the Season Finale just one week away, there are a ton of questions yet to be answered, and our groups are still widely scattered. Now that everyone save for Daryl and possibly Beth seems to be on the road (or tracks) to the same destination, this situation should be changing very soon. How much did it change tonight? Were any lingering questions answered? And how does Scott Gimple follow last week’s intense episode, the best of this season and possibly the entire show so far? Click after the break to read my episode recap and commentary, as I try to dissect what we learned tonight, and suggest what may be coming up next week.

Glenn looking a little worse for wear

This week brings the penultimate episode of Season 4; it’s hard to believe that we have only one more week to go after this, and then the long wait until October. Last week was an extremely intense, challenging episode that held viewers in its rather discomfiting spell for the whole hour. How will this week’s episode manage to measure up to that? It is important to note, however, that penultimate episodes have been important each of the last three seasons. In Season 1, we had Episode 105 “Wildfire,” where the survivors arrived at the CDC, only to find things much worse than they thought; then Episode 215 “Better Angels,” notable for the final showdown between Rick and his best friend Shane; and last year’s Episode 315 “This Sorrowful Life,” in which Merle made the ultimate sacrifice as a form of redemption, and the Governor got ready for his assault on the prison. The thing is, each of these episodes was a culmination of events and tensions that had been building for several episodes (for two seasons, in the case of Shane). Here in Season 4 Land, however, things are not quite so obvious. Yes, it looks like Terminus is going to be the location of this season’s endgame, but we still know absolutely nothing about the place, its inhabitants, or their purpose (if the place is even inhabited at this point – the signs could be old). Terminus as a name is patently symbolic, representing both the end of the road for our survivor groups, and the end of the season as they, presumably, start to meet up once again as they arrive, not to mention that it is a euphemism for death itself. Is that what our survivors will find down the tracks? For my thoughts on where “Us” will take, well, us, click through after the break.

Last week saw us catching up with several of the scattered survivors from The Governor’s attack on the prison, and the addition of three new characters right at the very end of the episode. Abraham got to speak one line, and a pretty badass line it was; how about the other two, Eugene and Rosita? What do these newcomers bring to the table? And how will the game change over the back half of Season Four? The title for tonight’s episode – “Claimed” – suggests ownership, and perhaps disagreement; claims lead to counterclaims, and sometimes more than one person wants the same thing bad enough to fight for it. Click through after the break to see how things turn out.

Eugene: business in the front, party in the back

Last week’s Rashomon-esque story showed us several groups of survivors as they slowly wend their way back together, and took a break from the Rick/Carl/Michonne triumvirate. This week looks to add some spice to the mix, as we have a trio of unexpected returnees, and a trio of fresh faces that are guaranteed to change things up. Seems things are coming in threes, doesn’t it? Click through after the break to see what might be coming up this Sunday.
